Common Dating Scams and How They Are Structured
Almost every dating scam is one of four structures. Recognising the shape early matters more than spotting any individual red flag, because the shape is what does not vary.
The long-game romance scam
Weeks or months of genuine-feeling conversation, then a crisis: a medical bill, a customs fee, a frozen account, a stranded relative. The amount is usually modest at first and grows once a payment has been made.
The structure depends on time invested, because sunk cost is the mechanism. That is why the request never comes early. If you are being asked for money by someone you have not met, the length of the relationship is not evidence that it is real; it is the reason the request works.
The investment approach, now the dominant form
A conversation that drifts toward trading, crypto, or a platform the person has done well on. There is often a real-looking app, a small withdrawal that succeeds to build confidence, and then a much larger deposit that cannot be withdrawn.
This variant has overtaken the classic emergency request in reported volume. Anyone who moves a dating conversation toward an investment opportunity is running it, without exception. There is no version of this that is real.
Sextortion
Fast escalation to explicit images or video, then a threat to send them to your contacts unless you pay. The account is usually new and the escalation is unusually quick, because the model depends on volume rather than on any particular target.
Paying does not end it; it establishes that you pay. Stop responding, do not delete the messages, report to the platform and to the police. In the United States the FBI takes these reports, and if you are under 18, NCMEC will act to have images removed.
The billing trap
Not a person but a business model: a low advertised trial that renews at several times the rate, on a schedule that is disclosed somewhere you did not read. The dating equivalent of a gym contract.
Check the renewal rate rather than the headline rate before paying, and check whether the subscription was bought through the app store or the website, because that determines where you can cancel it.
What they have in common
Urgency, a reason meeting is impossible, and a path that leads off the platform. Any two of those together is enough to stop and look at the third.
