Local Dating: What Proximity Features Actually Do

Precision is a safety setting, not a quality setting

An app that shows distance to a tenth of a mile is giving anyone willing to move around and re-check enough data to locate you. This has been demonstrated repeatedly against dating apps and it does not require any special skill.

Coarse distance bands cost you almost nothing in matching quality. If an app offers a setting to round or hide distance, that setting is the first one to change.

Background location is the one to refuse

Granting location only while using the app gives you the feature. Granting it always gives the app a continuous record of your movements, which serves the platform and not you. Both iOS and Android let you choose.

Travel and jurisdiction

Some apps hide your profile automatically when you enter a country where being identified carries legal risk. Most do not. If you travel, establish which yours does before you land.

Distance spoofing and what it means for you

Several apps let a paying user set their location somewhere else. That is sold as a travel feature, and its side effect is that the distance shown next to a profile is not always a fact about where that person is.

Read distance as a claim rather than a measurement, particularly when arranging to meet. Confirming the area in conversation costs one message.

Check the distance setting before the first photo

Precision is adjustable on most platforms and the default is usually the finest setting available. Change it before you upload anything, because a photo plus a precise distance is a materially different disclosure from a photo alone.
