Both models exist and they behave differently. A preference toggle on a general platform gives you reach and a higher volume of profiles that do not match what you set. A dedicated space gives you a smaller pool with less noise.

Neither is better in the abstract. The question worth asking is which failure mode you would rather manage, because you will manage one of them.

The unwanted-contact test

Run this in the first session on a free account: set your preference, then check whether the profiles contacting you respect it. Platforms that route a general pool at you regardless of setting will show this immediately, and it does not improve after payment.

Verification status

Operator and live status are checked for every platform in our table. Pricing and deletion are not. Where we have not checked, the cell is empty rather than filled with the platform's own claim.

Blocking behaviour is worth testing early

Block a profile in the first session and see what happens next. On a well-built platform the blocked account disappears from your search results and cannot see you at all. On a weaker one it only stops direct messages, leaving the profile visible and the person able to create a second account and continue.

This is the difference between a platform that treats unwanted contact as a safety problem and one that treats it as a notifications problem, and it takes about two minutes to establish.

Photo verification and what the badge means

A verified badge normally means the person matched a live selfie to their profile photos. It does not mean the platform checked their name, age, or relationship status, and it is worth not reading more into it than that.

It is still the most useful single signal available, because it rules out photos lifted from someone else, which is the most common form of misrepresentation in this category.
