A large share of the casual dating brands marketed to gay men are operated by companies that also run straight-facing brands on the same infrastructure. BuddyGays, for example, is marketed as a gay hookup platform while sitting in the same affiliate distribution as several general casual dating brands.

This is not automatically a problem. It becomes one when a brand implies a dedicated community and delivers a filtered view of a general pool. Checking the operator before paying tells you which you are buying.

Whether the free tier lets you receive messages

The single most useful thing to establish on a free account is whether you can read an incoming message without paying. Platforms that show you that messages exist but hide the contents are running a conversion mechanic, not a free tier.

How the platform handles outing risk

Discretion features matter more in this category than in most: whether photos can be blurred by default, whether the app icon and billing descriptor are neutral, and whether location is shown as a distance or a map. The billing descriptor is the one people forget, and it is the one that appears on a shared bank statement.

Self-service deletion, or a support ticket

Self-service deletion is a reasonable proxy for how a platform treats users generally. A platform that requires a support ticket to leave has made a deliberate choice about friction.

Distance display is a safety setting

Platforms show proximity in one of two ways: a rounded distance, or a position on a map. Rounded distance is safe. A map position, or an exact distance that updates as you move, can be triangulated by anyone willing to move around and watch the number change.

Check which one a platform uses before uploading a photo. Where the setting exists, cap the precision at the coarsest option the app offers, since matching does not get meaningfully worse at neighbourhood resolution.
