What actually happened
Craigslist removed personals entirely rather than moderate them, citing the new liability created by FOSTA-SESTA. The law made platforms potentially liable for user postings in a way that made an unmoderated free-text personals board commercially untenable.
The part that matters when judging a replacement: the thing that made Craigslist personals distinctive was that it was free, text-only, unstructured and required no profile. Every commercial replacement has reversed all four of those properties, because the business model requires it.
Why replacements do not feel the same
